Kanuka New Zealand

Kānuka (Kunzea ericoides) is endemic to New Zealand. In its typical form it can grow into a tree up to 30 m tall. Although mānuka/kahikātoa and kānuka have a superficial similarity and are collectively known as ‘tea trees’ they are genetically very distinct from each other. Kānuka leaves lack the sharp tip of its more known cousin, the mānuka/kahikātoa. The flowers of Kanuka are usually solitary but occur in clusters.

Kānuka is common throughout lowland, mountain scrub and forest margins of the North & South Islands. The species has a wide range of tolerances and has been found growing around active geothermal systems. It can be found from sea level to 1800 metres.
